Mini Slip Cover Tutorial

Recently I Purchased two very mauve wing chairs for a screaming good deal....
I envisioned them slip covered.......my sweetie pie of a husband didn't share my vision....

The Before
(Definitely not my best photography)

The first thing I do is cut pieces for the back of the chair with 3" extra on each side ....
and the seat back with up to 5" on each side.....

I pin the top together along the curve so it's fitted....
then I baste2" stitches in dark thread.

Next is the inside of the arms....where ever there is a seam in your upholstery make a seam in your slip cover. So here I seamed where the upper wing meets the lower roll of the arms.
You will see the fabric is already tucked in between the arm and back of the seat. that's why you need the extra fabric.....to tuck. that's what makes it look tight and fitted.

Make tucks around the arms pin and baste....
The arms can be tricky...go slowly and remember where there is a seam in the upholstery make a seam in your slip cover....

The extra on the back and the outside of the arms gets folded under and then you can attach the zipper, Velcro, or ties.....
Ties are the simplest and easiest first time choice.....
not to mention it's a cute cottage choice....

For the cushion you will need some basic seamstress skills...
make your piping first, then sew it to the front and back pieces of cushion fabric.
Then attach the box strip of fabric.....

Attach the zipper section on the sides.....

The Zipper runs along the back of the cushion so it's hidden when the cushion is on the chair....

Measure the length of the skirt and cut and sew them first....
Then attach them to the slip cover....
You will need to fit the slip cover onto the chair and then remove to sew....
I like to run the inside seams through the serger but you can use a zigzag too, it gives it a finished look and it will wash and wear better.....

Finished!
This is one of two....and they are beautiful in their new home.....
Here are a couple pictures of slip covers I have done.....

The chair in the back ground is a slip cover too....

This is a slip covered chair that was purchased at the shop...
It was made with matlese coverlet so there is a beautiful texture to it you cant see....
But I can't take credit for how cute this room is....It is the sanctuary for a lady who is clearly talented...

I love the idea of different chairs....
Although having done this myself,
I caution you
Its not always as charming as it looks in magazines.....
If you have any OCD at all it will drive you CRAZY....lol

Winter Storm for 2012

It's been a messy clean up around the NW for everyone......
I am sooooo looking forward to spring.
Not just me either, even V planted beautiful white prim roses in our planters at the shop.....

Here is some of what we have seen.....

Little snow......doesn't hurt, right?

Sure was pretty, but I can't drive in it. SO I stayed home.....ALOT.

This is the Plum Blossom (one of two) that was planted when our home was built in 1978....
One on each side of our property line. LOVE at first sight for me when we looked at the house.....

Then came the ICE.......
(insert jaws theme music here).....

It was the most beautiful thing I had ever seen......
It looked like everything was encased in crystal....

I feel a little guilty because my family lost power for about 2 hours, total.....
Victoria just got power back yesterday.....
that is a week with no power in a 100 year old farm house.....

It wasn't until the second night.....
I began to realize (with the help of the local news) what all that beautiful snow and ice could do.....
Split my beautiful Plum Blossom right in half.....
this is taken after neighbor moved his car from beneath it.....Thank God un-harmed.....

This is what we had left......
very sad, but neighbor and I agreed to replant another flowering plum this spring.....

However sad losing our Plum Blossom was, I am happy to report the other tree lost a few branches but is mostly still in tact. our entire street was lined with them.....only 5 remain on the block.....I hope everyone will replant new ones this spring....
As for the huge 30 plus year old oak we have in our back yard....half is gone and we are hoping it will persevere....
our neighbors lost one fir tree but mostly alot of branches....all over our yard....Hahahaha.

Silver lining moment for us....we are all safe, wont need to prune any trees this summer, and we had alot of home time to make new things for our shoppe.....
